Dr. Arogyaswami Paulraj (Paul) is a pioneer of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless technology, and widely credited with its development and success. MIMO technology, which has increased the data capacity of wireless systems exponentially, is now at the core of most wireless networks. Since his early work on the MIMO concept at Stanford University, Dr. Paulraj has continued to refine, commercialize and advance MIMO technology.
Paul joined Stanford University in 1991, after three decades of service with the Indian Government, and has been Professor Emeritus since 2013. He remains active in the wireless industry as an advisor to technology and venture capital companies.
In 1999, Paul founded Iospan Wireless Inc. which pioneered MIMO-OFDMA wireless technology now used in 4G, 5G and WiFi networks. In 2003, he co-founded Beceem Communications Inc. which became the leader in 4G WiMAX chip sets. In 2014, Paul founded Rasa Networks for WiFi Network Analytics. These companies were later acquired by Intel, Broadcom and HPE respectively.
Recognitions for his contributions to MIMO wireless technology include the Marconi Prize, the IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal, and Induction into the USPTO National Inventors Hall of Fame. Paul is a member of many academies worldwide including the US National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has published extensively on MIMO, and is a co-inventor on 83 US patents.
During his 30 years in the Indian Navy, concluding in 1991, Paul contributed to the development of ASW sonar technology, one of India’s most successful military R&D projects, and to the founding of three national research centers in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Advanced Computing and Military Electronics. Paul has received several recognitions in India including the Padma Bhushan, the country’s third highest civilian honor. In 2022, Paul was inducted into the Wireless Hall of Fame.
