For decades, the Wireless History Foundation (WHF) has played a unique role in our industry: preserving the lessons of wireless pioneers while ensuring those lessons inform the entrepreneurs and innovators who will shape what comes next. At its core, WHF has always been about connection—connecting generations, ideas, and experience to progress.

Today, that mission takes on new urgency.

The wireless industry is entering a pivotal moment. Network demand continues to accelerate, technologies are evolving rapidly, and the need for skilled talent spans technical, business, and operational roles. Yet too many students—despite being deeply connected by wireless technology—remain disconnected from the wireless community itself.

That’s why the Wireless Futures Program, a new initiative of the Wireless Infrastructure Association (WIA) Foundation, is so important. It is designed to support exactly what WHF has done so well for decades: create meaningful connections—this time between the industry’s established leaders and the next generation of innovators, builders, and entrepreneurs.

Introducing the Next Generation to the Wireless Community

The Wireless Futures Program is an industry‑wide internship matching initiative designed to help wireless companies engage with emerging talent through a streamlined, centralized online portal. The program connects undergraduate and graduate students from colleges and universities with real‑world opportunities across telecom, engineering and business—introducing them not just to jobs, but to an industry and a community. Internships are often the first—and most influential—point of entry into the industry. Through the Wireless Futures Program, we are opening that door wider and making it more intentional.

From Inspiration to Industry Readiness

One of the consistent challenges we hear from WIA members is industry readiness. Too often, graduates arrive with academic credentials but without hands‑on exposure to the complexity, pace, and expectations of the wireless ecosystem. The result is longer onboarding cycles and missed opportunities for both employers and early career professionals.

The Wireless Futures Program is designed to help close that gap. By engaging students earlier—while they are still learning—we create a practical bridge between education and application. Internships allow students to gain real‑world experience, while employers identify, mentor, and develop talent aligned with their needs.

Strengthening the Pipeline—Together

As someone who is privileged to serve both as President and CEO of the Wireless Infrastructure Association and as a member of the Wireless History Foundation’s Board of Influencers, I see this effort as more than a workforce program—it is an investment in the continuity of our industry.

The success of the Wireless Futures Program depends on industry partnership. We are asking wireless companies to participate by showcasing their internship and co‑op opportunities through the WFP portal and working with the WIA Foundation to expand access and awareness. If you or your company are interested in participating, contact info@wirelessfutures.wia.org.

Wireless has always been built by people who learned from those who came before them. Through the Wireless History Foundation’s enduring mission, we have an opportunity to ensure that tradition continues, connecting generations to power the future of wireless. Thank you to the Wireless History Foundation for its support in building the next generation of wireless leaders.
