Denver, CO— October 24, 2019 – An esteemed group of honorees joined the 57 wireless industry pioneers and innovators inducted into the prestigious Wireless Hall of Fame. The event, hosted by the Wireless History Foundation (WHF), a nonprofit organization that has honored the hall of fame members for the past decade, honored Lawrence D. Garvey, Ted Rappaport and the Android Founders. “We were so thrilled to induct this year’s class of Hall of Fame honorees” said Jenifer Snyder, Executive Director of the Wireless History Foundation, “their contributions to the fabric of wireless history were celebrated by the wireless industry, our Wireless Hall of Fame members and our generous sponsors.”
- The Android Founders – Rich Miner, Andy Rubin, Nick Sears, Chris White: Observing fragmentation in mobile Operating Systems leading to a lack of a consistent user experience and a predictable way to distribute mobile applications, the Android Founders launched the task of building Android, a developer and mobile ecosystem friendly Open Source Mobile OS, which today is the operating system on over 2.5 billion active mobile devices worldwide. The Android Founders were introduced by Wireless History Foundation Board Member, Rob Mechaley.
- Lawrence D. Garvey (posthumously): Dana Garvey accepted the award on behalf of her father. A pioneer in paging and two-way voice systems, Larry played a critical role in the fight that spanned over a decade to convince the Federal Communications Commission to open cellular applications to radio common carriers as well as landline telephone companies. Dana was introduced by John Prendergast of the Blooston Law Firm.
- Theodore S. Rappaport: A ground breaking academic and entrepreneur whose work has paved the way for modern wireless communication systems, Ted is recognized as one of the preeminent minds in the wireless field. He has founded academic wireless research centers at three major universities– New York University (NYU), the University of Texas, and Virginia Tech. Ted was introduced by 2012 Wireless Hall of Fame Member, Raj Singh.
